Hardcore Mercedes AMG GT Black Series spotted testing

Mercedes is prepping a more hardcore ‘Black-Series’ version of its latest supercar, the AMG GT. The track-biased model is likely to debut in late-2016, and will get more power and sharper handling to take on the Porsche 911 GT3 and Aston’s newly renamed Vantage GT12.

Details are scarce on the new model variant so far, but we expect this to bear the traditional ‘Black Series’ nameplate denoting the hardest and fastest AMG cars in the range. Despite the AMG GT being a brand new car and the Black Series variants usually appearing at the end of the model’s lifecycle, it seems Merc is already underway testing.

Our spyshots of a testing prototype show racier styling additions including a purposeful front-splitter, albeit one that’s slightly turned-down from the GT3 championship race car we saw at Geneva this year. There are also large intakes at the front and new ones in the bonnet, while carbon-fibre lourves channel air over the sculptedbody.

There isn’t much else changed on the exterior of the car, but we’ll expect the production version to get bigger wheels, tyres and uprated brakes as standard, along with stiffer springs and revised steering. There will also be weight saving measures including the carbon-fibre roof seen here, dropping the weight by anything up to 100kg.

Power will be up too, with the 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 receiving tweaks to boost it up by at least 50bhp over the GT S, which already has 503bhp. Torque should also rise and the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission will get worked on, improving on the GT’s already impressive 0-62mph time of 3.7 seconds.
